7 day road trip

7-Day Cape Town & Garden Route Itinerary | Cape Quest Adventures

The ideal one-week South African road trip: Cape Town highlights, dramatic coastal scenery, Knysna lagoon, ancient Tsitsikamma forest, and a taste of the Klein Karoo.

7 days | Best time: September – April | Self-drive road trip | Cape Town → Garden Route → Karoo → Cape Town

Why this route works

The ideal balance of city, coast, wildlife, and adventure

The Cape Town and Garden Route combination is one of South Africa's most satisfying one-week journeys precisely because it covers such different terrain. You move from a cosmopolitan city backed by a World Heritage mountain to a coastline of lagoons, sea cliffs, and ancient indigenous forest — and then, in a single pass over the Outeniqua mountains, into the arid, wide-open Klein Karoo. That contrast is the trip's strongest asset.

Three days in Cape Town is enough to cover the city's headline experiences — Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, and the cultural texture of the city bowl — without the pace feeling rushed. The fourth day's drive east functions as a genuine transition: the Overberg farmland, the mountains flanking George, and the first sight of the Garden Route coastline all signal that you have moved somewhere entirely different.

Days five and six deliver the Garden Route's two most distinctive experiences: Knysna and Tsitsikamma back-to-back keep the momentum without overloading any single day. The Oudtshoorn detour on day six adds geological drama and a completely different landscape to the mix. And the seventh day's drive back along Route 62 or the N2 closes the loop at its own pace, with room for a final Cape Town evening that the itinerary has earned.

Day 1

Cape Town Arrival — Waterfront, Bo-Kaap and Signal Hill

Morning

Arrive at Cape Town International and head to the V&A Waterfront for your first view of Table Mountain from the harbor. Keep the first morning relaxed — orientation before ambition.

Afternoon

Walk the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, known for its brightly painted Cape Malay homes and cobblestone streets. Pair the visit with a city food walk or short cultural tour for the historical context that transforms it from a photo stop into something more considered.

Evening

Catch sunset from Signal Hill or the Camps Bay beachfront strip, where the Atlantic catches the late light most dramatically. Dinner here sets the tone for the week ahead.

Day 2

Cape Peninsula — Chapman's Peak, Cape Point and Boulders Beach

Morning

Leave early and drive south via Chapman's Peak — one of the world's most striking coastal roads, with the Atlantic dropping away below the cliff edge. Allow time for photo stops along the way.

Afternoon

Continue to Cape Point within Table Mountain National Park, then loop back via Boulders Beach in Simon's Town for close encounters with the endangered African penguin colony — one of the best accessible wildlife experiences in South Africa.

Evening

Return along the False Bay coast or stop for seafood in Simon's Town before heading back to the city.

Day 3

Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch and City Culture

Morning

Book the Table Mountain cableway in advance and go when the forecast is clear. The summit plateau is a recognized biodiversity hotspot with views that stretch across two coastlines. Arrive early to avoid peak queues.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden at the foot of the mountain, or head to the Constantia wine estates for a tasting and long lunch among some of South Africa's oldest vines.

Evening

Final Cape Town evening: explore the Bree Street or Kloof Street restaurant strip before an early night ahead of the road trip departure.

Day 4

Cape Town to the Garden Route — Mossel Bay and Wilderness

Morning

Pack the car and leave by 8am for the drive east on the N2. The route through the Overberg passes rolling wheat farmland and distant mountain ranges — allow 4.5 to 5 hours to Mossel Bay with stops. The landscape shifts dramatically as the mountains close in around George.

Afternoon

Arrive in Mossel Bay for a stretch and a harbor lunch. The old port and maritime museum make a worthwhile hour's stop before continuing to Wilderness, a Garden Route town set between a lagoon, indigenous forest, and open ocean beach.

Evening

Dinner in Wilderness village or nearby George. An early night positions you well for the exploring day that follows.

Day 5

Knysna and Tsitsikamma National Park

Morning

Drive to Knysna — the Garden Route's most characterful town, built around a lagoon flanked by the dramatic sandstone formations known as the Heads. Visit the viewpoint, then take a slow walk through the Waterfront for coffee and local craft shops.

Afternoon

Continue east to Tsitsikamma National Park, where the Storms River meets the Indian Ocean between towering gorge walls. Walk the suspension bridge trail above the river mouth — dramatic, accessible, and free with park entry. Kayaking the gorge or a guided forest walk can be arranged locally.

Evening

Return to Knysna or stay overnight near Storms River if the park day runs long. Both options work well.

Day 6

Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves and Route 62

Morning

Drive north from Knysna over the Outeniqua Pass, a winding mountain road with sweeping views back across the Garden Route coastline. Descend into Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo — a semi-arid valley framed by ranges that feels entirely unlike the coast left an hour before.

Afternoon

Tour the Cango Caves, one of Southern Africa's finest natural wonders: a sequence of vast limestone chambers built over millions of years. The standard tour takes around an hour; an adventure option involves navigating narrow formations. Wildlife sanctuaries near town offer close encounters with cheetahs and other African species.

Evening

Return via Route 62 through mountain passes and small farming towns with local wine cellars and farmstalls. Stay overnight in Oudtshoorn or continue back to the coast.

Day 7

Return to Cape Town — Scenic Drive and Farewell Dinner

Morning

Choose your return route: the coastal N2 with a stop at Swellendam, a beautifully preserved Cape Dutch town, or the inland Route 62 through Robertson's wine country. Both offer worthwhile stops rather than just transit kilometers.

Afternoon

Arrive in Cape Town in time for a final afternoon in the city. Use it to revisit something missed earlier — the Company Gardens, a beach at Clifton, or the Old Biscuit Mill if arriving on a Saturday.

Evening

A proper farewell dinner somewhere that captures what Cape Town does best: fresh seafood, local wine, and a kitchen that understands both.

Highlights

Top experiences along the Garden Route

Chapman's Peak Drive

One of the world's most dramatic coastal roads, hugging a cliff face above the Atlantic. Best driven south toward Cape Point so the ocean is on your left and the views open progressively as you round each bend.

Boulders Beach Penguins

A colony of endangered African penguins at Simon's Town on the Cape Peninsula. The proximity to the birds is remarkable, and the boardwalk keeps the experience calm for both visitors and animals.

Tsitsikamma Suspension Bridge

A short walk from the Storms River Mouth rest camp to a suspension bridge above the gorge where the river meets the Indian Ocean. No booking required, free with park entry, and genuinely spectacular.

Knysna Heads Viewpoint

The sandstone cliffs flanking the entrance to Knysna lagoon are the most recognizable image of the Garden Route. The viewpoint from the Western Head gives the best perspective across the lagoon and the town.

Cango Caves

A network of limestone chambers near Oudtshoorn that ranks among Southern Africa's finest natural formations. The standard heritage tour covers the most impressive chambers; the adventure tour adds a physical challenge for those comfortable in tight spaces.

Outeniqua Pass

The mountain pass connecting George on the coast to Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. The views back toward the Garden Route coastline on the descent are some of the most expansive on the route — worth pulling over for.

Accommodation

Where to stay along this route

The Garden Route has a well-developed accommodation scene across all price points. These are general area recommendations, not specific properties.

Cape Town (Days 1–3)

The City Bowl and De Waterkant neighborhoods offer central walkability and easy access to the V&A Waterfront and mountain trails. The Atlantic Seaboard suits those who prioritize beach access and sunset views.

Wilderness or George (Day 4)

Wilderness is the more intimate option — a small town between the lagoon and the sea. George is larger with more dining options and is a good base if you want easier access to the N2 for the next morning's drive east.

Knysna (Day 5)

Staying in or near Knysna town puts you central to both the Heads and the drive east to Tsitsikamma. The waterfront area and Thesen Island have the best concentration of restaurants.

Storms River or Oudtshoorn (Day 6)

An overnight near Tsitsikamma lets you access the park early before day-trippers arrive. Alternatively, stay in Oudtshoorn after the Cango Caves to explore the Klein Karoo at a slower pace before the return drive.

Getting around

Self-driving the Garden Route

A self-drive rental car is the most practical way to follow this itinerary. Public transport between Garden Route towns exists but is infrequent and not suited to the day trip structure this route depends on. Pick up your car in Cape Town and drop it off at the same location — one-way rentals to George or Port Elizabeth are possible but attract a drop fee.

Cape Town → Mossel Bay ~380 km · ~4.5 hrs
Mossel Bay → Wilderness ~55 km · ~45 min
Wilderness → Knysna ~35 km · ~30 min
Knysna → Tsitsikamma ~90 km · ~1 hr
Tsitsikamma → Oudtshoorn ~130 km · ~1.5 hrs
Oudtshoorn → Cape Town ~440 km · ~5 hrs

Drive on the left. South Africa uses kilometres. The N2 is well-maintained and clearly signed. Mountain passes — particularly the Outeniqua Pass and parts of Route 62 — require a lower gear and reduced speed; they are straightforward in dry conditions but need extra care in rain. Fuel stations can be sparse in the Klein Karoo, so fill up whenever the gauge drops below half.

Travel tips

Make the seven days count

Check Table Mountain weather the night before and book the cableway online to avoid queues on the day.
Leave for the Cape Peninsula and Garden Route days as early as you comfortably can — both reward an unhurried pace.
Book Cango Caves tours in advance during peak season; the adventure option sells out quickly.
A self-drive rental car makes this itinerary work best. Allow extra time on mountain passes and avoid driving them after dark.
Pack for Cape Town's variable weather and the Karoo's heat: layers for the city, lighter clothing inland, sunscreen for both.
Tsitsikamma National Park charges a conservation fee at the gate — carry both cash and card as signal can be unreliable near the park entrance.
The Garden Route is busiest over South African school holidays (mid-December to mid-January, Easter, and late June to mid-July). Roads and accommodation fill up quickly; book at least two months ahead for peak travel.
Currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Card payments are widely accepted at restaurants, fuel stations, and accommodation. Carry a small amount of cash for national park entry gates and rural farmstalls on Route 62.

Recommended experiences

Tours and activities worth booking ahead

These are the experiences that carry the most weight on this itinerary — and the ones most likely to sell out during peak season.

Cape Peninsula Full-Day Tour

Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, and Boulders Beach in one guided loop. Removes the parking and navigation stress of the Peninsula drive.

Table Mountain Guided Hike or Cableway

Book the cableway online in advance. Guided hikes via Platteklip Gorge include summit interpretation and are suitable for most fitness levels.

Robben Island Ferry and Tour

A World Heritage site requiring advance booking. Ferries sell out weeks ahead in summer. Allow a half-day minimum.

Knysna Lagoon Sunset Cruise

A relaxed two-hour cruise out toward the Heads and back. Best in the late afternoon when the light is low over the western bluffs.

Tsitsikamma Kayaking or Gorge Tour

A guided kayak through the Storms River gorge gives a completely different perspective on the national park — from the water looking up at the canyon walls.

Cango Caves Adventure Tour

The standard heritage tour is an excellent experience. The adventure option adds a physical dimension and is worth booking if you are comfortable in confined spaces.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Seven days gives you a solid experience of both. Three days covers Cape Town's headline sights — Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, and city culture — while days four through seven take you east along the Garden Route through Mossel Bay, Knysna, Tsitsikamma, and Oudtshoorn. You will not run out of things to do, but you will need to stay focused. Ten days is better if you want to linger in the Winelands or spend extra time in a single Garden Route town.
