3 Days in Cape Town: The Essential First-Time Itinerary

Three focused days in Cape Town — Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, and Robben Island — with enough pace to feel rewarding rather than rushed.

Day 1

Table Mountain and the City Bowl

Morning

Arrive and settle in. Check Table Mountain cable car conditions immediately — a clear first afternoon is the ideal time to go, removing the scheduling pressure from the rest of the trip. Keep the morning gentle and give yourself time to orient.

Afternoon

Ride the cableway to the summit plateau for views across two coastlines, then walk the boardwalk trails around the top. Return to the city and explore the Company Gardens, the South African Museum, and Long Street before the evening.

Evening

Dinner in Kloof Street or Bree Street, where the city's best restaurants are concentrated. Keep it nearby and early to recover from travel.

Day 2

Cape Peninsula Full Day

Morning

Leave by 7:30am, driving south through Hout Bay and up Chapman's Peak Drive — nine kilometres of cliff road above the Atlantic that rewards slow driving and viewpoint stops. Continue to Cape Point within Table Mountain National Park and allow 90 minutes at the top.

Afternoon

Drive north along the False Bay coastline to Boulders Beach in Simon's Town for the African penguin colony. Arrive before 2pm for the most active penguins. Lunch in Simon's Town or Kalk Bay on the return.

Evening

Return to Cape Town via Muizenberg. Casual dinner in the southern suburbs or back in the city bowl.

Day 3

Robben Island and Waterfront

Morning

Take the ferry to Robben Island — depart early and allow three hours for the full experience. Former political prisoners lead tours through the B-Section and the limestone quarry, giving the history personal weight. Book well in advance; ferries fill weeks ahead in peak season.

Afternoon

Return to the V&A Waterfront for the afternoon: the Two Oceans Aquarium, the Watershed market, or a Bo-Kaap walking tour if the morning energy allows.

Evening

Atlantic Seaboard sunset from Sea Point or Camps Bay before a farewell dinner.

Travel tips

Make three days feel complete.

Three days forces real priorities. Table Mountain is the most weather-dependent stop on this list, so treat the first clear afternoon window as the right moment to go rather than saving it for a fixed slot.
The Cape Peninsula takes a full day done properly — Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, and Boulders Beach add up quickly once you factor in parking, queuing, and the urge to linger. A guided full-day tour removes the transport and timing decisions.
Book Robben Island ferry tickets before you travel. They sell out weeks ahead during summer and school holiday windows, and there is no walk-up alternative on the day.
Rideshare works well for city days and Waterfront trips, which means a hire car is not essential unless you plan to self-drive the Peninsula. Keep that transport decision simple.
Leave room in the final afternoon for something unplanned: a walk through a neighbourhood you found over lunch, a last-minute viewpoint, or an extra hour over a meal. The best Cape Town moments often come from following the light rather than the itinerary.

Plan smarter

Book the experiences that carry each day.

Cape Peninsula tours, Robben Island ferries, and city walking routes are all worth comparing before you arrive.
