14 Days South Africa: Cape Town, Garden Route and Kruger Itinerary

Two weeks that move through Cape Town, the Winelands, Hermanus, the Garden Route, and Kruger — a first South Africa trip that earns its length.

Day 1

Cape Town Arrival

Morning

Arrive and settle in at the City Bowl or V&A Waterfront. Keep the first afternoon simple — walk the harbour, take stock of the weather, and check Table Mountain conditions for the coming days.

Afternoon

Waterfront exploration: the Watershed market, harbour views, and a first Cape Town meal.

Evening

Early dinner and an early night. Fourteen days is long enough to start with intention rather than exhaustion.

Day 2

Table Mountain and City Bowl

Morning

Table Mountain cableway on the first clear morning. Go early before afternoon wind builds.

Afternoon

Bo-Kaap, the South African Museum, Company Gardens, and Long Street.

Evening

Signal Hill sunset and dinner in the city.

Day 3

Cape Peninsula

Morning

Early departure via Chapman's Peak to Cape Point — leave by 7:30am.

Afternoon

Boulders Beach penguins, Simon's Town, and Kalk Bay return.

Evening

Seafood dinner in the Southern Suburbs.

Day 4

Robben Island and Waterfront

Morning

Early Robben Island ferry — give the island three hours minimum.

Afternoon

V&A Waterfront, Watershed market, or a Bo-Kaap walking tour.

Evening

Camps Bay sunset and Atlantic Seaboard dinner.

Day 5

Stellenbosch Wine Day

Morning

Drive to Stellenbosch — town walk and first estate tasting.

Afternoon

Long estate lunch, second tasting, and the town at dusk.

Evening

Return to Cape Town or overnight in Stellenbosch.

Day 6

Franschhoek

Morning

Franschhoek village and morning coffee.

Afternoon

Wine tram or a long restaurant lunch as the day's centre of gravity.

Evening

Return to Cape Town or overnight in Franschhoek.

Day 7

Hermanus Detour or Cape Town Flex Day

Morning

Drive to Hermanus via the Clarence Drive coastal road. Walk the Cliff Path on arrival — 12 kilometres of cliff-top trail above Walker Bay.

Afternoon

Whale watching cruise if in season (June to November), or Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley tasting.

Evening

Stay overnight in Hermanus or return to Cape Town depending on the next day's drive plan.

Day 8

Drive to the Garden Route

Morning

Depart early for the N2 east. Allow 4.5 to 5 hours to Wilderness, with a stop at Mossel Bay or Swellendam on the way through the Overberg.

Afternoon

Arrive in Wilderness — lagoon, lakes, and the slow first Garden Route evening.

Evening

Dinner in Wilderness village or George.

Day 9

Knysna and Tsitsikamma

Morning

Drive to Knysna. Walk the waterfront, view the Heads from the lookout, and browse the town before lunch.

Afternoon

Continue to Tsitsikamma National Park for the Storms River suspension bridge walk above the gorge where the river meets the Indian Ocean.

Evening

Return to Knysna or stay overnight near Storms River.

Day 10

Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo

Morning

Drive north over the Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn. Cango Caves guided heritage tour by mid-morning.

Afternoon

Wildlife sanctuary near Oudtshoorn or a drive through the Klein Karoo. Begin the return or continue west via Route 62.

Evening

Overnight in Oudtshoorn or continue west toward the Overberg.

Day 11

Return to Cape Town via Route 62

Morning

Drive back toward Cape Town — Route 62 through Robertson and the Langeberg mountains adds scenery, small wine towns, and farmstall stops to what would otherwise be a transit day.

Afternoon

Arrive in Cape Town in time for a rest afternoon, or stop overnight in Swellendam if the drive runs long.

Evening

Rest evening in Cape Town before the flight or connection to Kruger.

Day 12

Fly to Kruger Region

Morning

Fly Cape Town to Johannesburg, then connect to the Kruger region — Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa, or Skukuza depending on lodge location. Transfer to lodge on arrival.

Afternoon

Settle in, attend an orientation briefing, and join the late afternoon game drive if arrival time allows.

Evening

First evening in the bush — dinner at the lodge boma or main area.

Day 13

Kruger Full Safari Day

Morning

Pre-dawn game drive departing before first light. The hour around sunrise is often the most productive for predator activity.

Afternoon

Rest during midday heat. Pool, wildlife library, or a guided bush walk if the lodge offers one.

Evening

Afternoon game drive from 3:30pm through to sunset, followed by a night drive if available.

Day 14

Final Kruger Morning and Departure

Morning

Final morning game drive before the lodge's check-out time. Transfer to the nearest airstrip for a Johannesburg connection.

Afternoon

Fly home via Johannesburg, or add an additional Johannesburg night if the international connection requires it.

Evening

In transit or final overnight in Johannesburg.

Travel tips

Make the fourteen days count.

The Hermanus detour on Day 7 is optional rather than essential — skip it if the group prefers a rest day in Cape Town before the Garden Route drive. Add it if whale season aligns and marine wildlife is a priority.
Garden Route driving distances are manageable but cumulative. Do not underestimate how much time scenic stops, lunches, and coastal detours add to journey times. Build every drive day with a 30-minute buffer.
Flying between Cape Town and the Kruger region is strongly preferred over overland connections. The flight takes under two hours from Cape Town; driving would require an additional full day each way.
Book Kruger accommodation early. Private reserves in Greater Kruger — Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush — fill months ahead for peak season. SANParks rest camps also fill fast; reserve through the SANParks system as soon as dates are confirmed.
Robben Island ferry tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer. Book them before your Cape Town segment, not after you arrive.
Fourteen days is generous enough to breathe. Resist the urge to over-schedule: the best safari mornings, Winelands lunches, and Garden Route detours need room to extend beyond the plan without creating stress.
